On the 11th of June 1975, near the wine yard Murfatlari, an unexpected discover was made. During the daily work on Tibiširu Hill, was found the entrance to an old rupestric monument, a fairy hidden world, full of extraordinary sculptures. Let's go once again back in time. Someone still remembers that day. On the walls there were battle scenes, images representing dragons and other fantastic creatures. One could also see ships, flags, inscriptions. In fact it was a capital. An unusual construction with four underground levels. A world populated by shadows. Some dwellings connected by galleries, tombs, traps, etc. The labyrinth was indeed fabulous, we were fascinated. The significance of the majority of drawings id hard to understand. Human beings are figured holding in their hand a sign which represented their soul (for instance a modified cadaveric human face, very simplified, which had only eyes and nose). There are other enigmatic signs on the walls: horses on plains without ending, ships floating towards nowhere. Everything came from long time ago. To me, the drawings seemed to simple, as if someone made them playing on the walls. But the specialists considered them to be very precious. [ ... ] The naivety of the images was meant to be this way. The representations were full of life , signs were unique. Even the symbolic signs were very well particularized. Maybe this was the way in which the authors thought they would reach the origin of divinity. The drawings reflected not only personal believes, but also some ancient events. At Basarabi we can find traditions lost in the Neolithic Age, this fact being very confusing for many researchers. Here is an example: the snake is represented in many ways. He could be identical with the Viking one( for instance),but he might have a totally different meaning, who could tell for sure? In our folk tradition it is mentioned very often. It can also be seen on different monuments, on gates, it can be found in folk songs. It's a very ancient element. It symbolizes the revival the regeneration, the resurrection. Here is another odd thing: many of the numerous inscriptions written on the walls do not indicate the year when they were made, only the month and the day. Maybe because for the ancient people the time was similar to the eternity. They thought that only the mythic cycles were important ( the birth, the life, the death and the resurrection). All of them could be found in the nature too. The so called "runes" appear to be complex signs( groups of 2-3) separated by small lines. They might represent a word. Graphically speaking they are very well realised,in fact they are an ancient way of writing . Virgil Bilciurescu didn't find any connection between Romanian runes and the Northern, the Turkish or Siberian ones. English version by Nora Parvu
