- Nature, traveling, outdoor camp, and camp fire in Transylvania, the country "beyond the forests..." harmoniously combined under the maximum of the last total solar eclipse of the millennium -

In the heart of Romania, the Transylvanian Alps (the Carpathian mountains) hide the oldest and probably the most beautiful and impressive national park of this country. The Retezat mountain, as a separate entity, is tempting not only through its majestuous peak, but also because it offers at the same time notched and keen ridges magnificent glacial coppersmiths and valleys, wild moraines and slides, peculiar slabs and rock - formations, and, on the other hand we come across green valley, a tumult of flowing waters and glacial lakes of an exceptional beauty.

After a first night spent sleeping in hay at the feet of the mountain in the shed of Nea Oprut ( a native peasant from Ohaba village ) we will be brought near the mountain by a truck and, after a short slope we will get - through the quiet fair land of a coniferous forest - in the proximity of the Pietrele chalet where we will settle our first base camp. From here we will start on our first three tours with daypack to the neighboring areas in the mountain, offering us a fascinating landscape. At a altitude of 800 to 2,500 m we will rock through various vegetation zones starting with the leaf - bearing forests through the resinous ones, through the juniper Ô s layer up to the area of the alpine barrenness.

Of course, a day of rest can be inserted whenever necessary. On the days on which we move the camps we require the availability of covering 4 hours distances carrying a weight of 18 kg each.

After 3-4 days the base camp will be moved to a height of 2070 m in the surroundings of the lake Bucura, the largest glacial lake in Romania and second in size in the hole Carpathian chain. Settles now in the middle of the mountain we can reach from here its entire central area, enjoying its hidden inner beauties.

Further on we will move downwards from the alpine zone settling the base camp in the southern area of the massif at an altitude of 1620 m in a luring wonderful green glade. From here we will rove through an area which differs from the ones covered till now, characterized not by granite and rough - rocky aspect but by a carstic relief and by soft and mild peaks all green due to the rich vegetation extremely favorable to the moving of the flocks. Thus, we will meet flocks of hundreds of sheep, shepherds with their dogs and donkeys, pastoral life being an occupation practiced since ancient times an this land.

We may eat with the shepherd, from the same pan, maize with cheese prepared traditionally from the freshly milked milk right there at the sheepfold. If you do not prefer the cans!

On the last night, after returning from the charming glade we will enjoy again the wonderful smell of the freshly mown hay in the shed of Nea Oprut. At our host we will have a rustic supper and a breakfast when heading upwards on the mountain as well as when returning

The camp fires, the plum brandy, the singing and the good humor under the starry arch on bright evenings will complete the picture of this complex tour leading to its "fulfillment".

And, as if we haven't been spoiled enough by the generosity of the kind nature, we will have the chance to experience a unique event in one's lifetime - the absolute maximum ( in the Retezat area ) of the total solar eclipse on August 11 1999 - the last one of this kind in the millennium.

YOU CANNOT MISS SUCH AN OPPORTUNITY ! YOU ARE WELCOME !
