CREDIT CARDS AND CHEQUES IN ROMANIA

As almost everything in Romania the ATM’s are recently introduced and for this reason people are still experimenting some difficulties in using them. We strongly recommend using the services of a travel agency which can pay for you in order to avoid such worries so that you can relax and enjoy your staying here. Although there are some external ATM’s, which should work 24 hours a day 7 days a week, we would advise not to rely exclusively on them, use them as emergency solution on weekends. The best thing to do is to go to one of the banks from 9 a.m. till 12 a.m. Monday till Friday. The only accepted cards are: VISA, MASTERCARD, EUROCARD but payments are made only in "lei"-Romanian currency. For receiving your money in hard currencies the only possibility is to use one of the AMERICAN EXPRESS, EUROCHEQUE, THOMAS COOK or MASTERCARD cheques only in the banks. Thanks to BCR Sibiu we can inform you, according to the prospect made by BCR, BANCPOST, BANCOREX, BANCA AGRICOLÃ and BANCA ION TIRIAC about the main points where credit cards and cheques are accepted.
According to our experience the maximum amount that can be received from ATMs varies from one bank to another and sometimes from one ATM to another. At the time this list was made BA and BPT’s ATMs in Sibiu allow receiving a maximum amount of 2,000,000 lei, BCR 1,500,000 and BCX 500,000 lei. Although all banks communicated that more operations can be done at the same ATM we strongly advice you not to try it for your card might remain obstructed.
